The Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation is proud to announce the eighth annual National Seminar for Middle School and High School Educators. This year’s seminar will run from Monday, July 10 through Friday, July 14, 2023. Teachers from public, private, and home school programs and those interested in education are invited to a week-long event at the Victims of Communism Museum in Washington, DC, where they will learn from top academic experts about the foundational concepts and key figures in the history Communism, and the over 100 million victims killed in just over 100 years. 

 

Educators will hear first-person testimony from survivors of Communist rule as well as receive instruction from leading experts, and learn about the newest tools and curriculum resources to teach their students about the legacy of Communism and its ongoing threat to freedom.

This year’s faculty includes Dr. Elizabeth Edwards Spalding, Dr. Paul Kengor, Dr. Jonathan Pidluzny, Catherine O’Connor, Dr. Naya Lekht, Steven W. Mosher, and Dr. Flagg Taylor.

 

Teachers will receive comprehensive lectures from seminar faculty on Communism, Totalitarianism, and Dissent, as well as insight into the lives and ideological influence of Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, and Mao Zedong, with a newly added lecture on China Today. Teachers will learn about the complicated History of the Cold War, the many acclaimed films and works of literature written and made about Communism, and practical ways to execute effective Pedagogy in their classrooms.

 

Teachers will have the opportunity to meet with and hear from witnesses and survivors of Communism including Channy Chhi Laux, a survivor of the Cambodian Khmer Rouge’s killing fields; Tanel Kapper, who escaped imprisonment from the Red Army twice in Siberia and returning to Estonia; Merita McCormack, whose family members in Albania were branded "kulaks" and stripped of their property; and Lily Tang Williams, a compelling advocate for freedom against the Chinese Communist Party's regime of oppression.
